CHAPTER SEVEN

Good Ole Boy

I freeze, afraid to even swallow when the cloth at the end of the table lifts.

First, a big plate of pecan pie is put on the floor, then two cups of eggnog, then a cowboy hat follows, and I know who it is. A face peeks at me, and he whispers, “Mind if I crash the party?”

My heart is having a conniption in my chest, and though I’m mighty afraid, I nod.

He sneaks under the tablecloth with me and makes himself comfortable, and then he hands me the plate and a cup. “Merry Christmas, Sugar.”

I just take them and stare at him, wondering if Damon saw him.

“My name’s Jon. I saw you come back here earlier and thought maybe you’d like some of the good stuff before it’s all gone.”

My answer is a loud and hollow swallow. I’m so panicked my ears are singing.

“Right, so, I’ve been looking into this boy you’re engaged to and it seems most everyone can’t stand him, so I’m wondering to myself what a pretty girl like you is doing wearing a ring that would lock her to him until death you two do part?”

It’s like he knows Damon because I always was worried it would be my death that would free him of me when he gets tired of terrifying me.

“Have a sip there, might loosen up your tongue,” he says with a soft grin.

He has gray eyes clearer than wind, hair short like he misses being in the army, and a physique that rivals every buff boy I’ve ever known, and I’ve known a few because around here, we shift our own hay bales and chop our own wood. Muscles are as normal here as camouflage caps are.

Obeying, I take a sip of the eggnog and mmm without thought, enjoying that delicious sweet custard taste. I look back at him, appreciating how he’s kept his voice low and quiet, respecting my need to go undetected.

“Momma picked him,” I whisper.

“Your Momma? The lady I saw you with earlier?” he pries, taking a sip of his also.

I just nod, watching him, smelling him this close. He smells like the outdoors.

“So your momma picked your husband, but you’re the one who has to live with him?”

“I know, but if I don’t listen, she beats me –”

I slap my hand over my mouth, eyes huge with horror. Oh no! I told on Momma! I told! I’m in big doo-doo now!

Jon takes my hand from my mouth, sandwiching it between both of his and resting it on his knee, his hold strong and warm and safe. “I’ll admit, Jane, I don’t understand why you’d do what your mom says but have to warn you that Damon is dangerous. He carves animals with a cruelty reserved for the worst psychopaths, and I confess I don’t want him near you, so I took him out back and punched him so hard he’s out cold in the cold.”

He chuckles at his funny.
